As we grow older, we become more matured, our mindset changes,
and guess what, our perception for ‘love’ has changed as well.
If you guys can still remember some of the terms we actually used to describe love/relationship, you will find that it can be quite amusing.
When we were 5 years old, attending nursery/kindergarten, you may have this very close buddy of an opposite sex. You may find him/her cute and you guys always talk and play together, and you announced to other childhood mates that he/she is your future husband/wife, and that you two are going to marry each other in the future. Silly as it may seem, but it’s so cute when 2 little kids actually make such ‘pact’ (of course we all know that the pact is fake)
When we were 12 years old, and we may have a crush on a female/male classmate whom you find not bad looking, and can also get along with pretty well. Most of the people(kids?) then used the term ‘puppy love’ to describe this type of feeling. (omg, haven’t heard of this term for a long long time) At that time, the feeling/relationship between two is very pure and simple. You may express your liking towards each other, but there’s nothing more than that.
When we were 16 years old, we always have a crush on someone who seems perfect in our eyes. He/she can be the best looking or the smartest in the school, or Mr/Ms popular or very talented. But of course, these type of people actually have a lot of admirers, and we most probably wouldn’t stand any chance. So we usually stead (term used in teenage life to describe ‘in a relationship’) with someone who is one-tier below but good enough. And usually, when we first enter a relationship, we will think that the relationship will last and we really like each other a lot (I use the word ‘like’ instead as most of us probably wouldn’t understand the meaning of love). And of course, when it leads to a bad outcome, we would have known that it’s not true.
When we were 20 years old, another new status was more popular in demand or in use, ‘it’s complicated’. People use this status when they are unsure whether they are single or attached with someone else. Why is it so? Firstly, they take relationship too lightly that they actually initiate breakup and reconciliation so frequently. Secondly, they don’t want to commit to a relationship. Thirdly, they don’t know if they are actually committing to the ‘right’ person. They then resort to becoming ‘flings’, ‘friends with benefit’, or having this so-called no-status relationship. That’s mainly because people actually have no faith or confidence in maintaining a long-lasting relationship.
And as we grow older, we realise that we are just looking for a soulmate, someone who is more suitable for us, someone whom we can depend on for the rest of our lives.
Our definition for love changes over the years, along with our mindset and perception of a relationship..
but there’s one thing that doesn’t change—
no matter how much fear or lack of confidence we have in rs.
even though we once got hurt in rs.
even though we couldn’t commit when we are in rs.
——in the end, we still long for love….
